New York City
24 March 2005 We had a glimpse of the Niaggra Falls as we made our trip down to New York. After a long journey and many stopovers, we were greeted by a great view across the harbour over looking Manhattan... with a full moon on the top. It was very impressive and surreal. This is home of the Big Apple and they don't come any bigger than this. We stopped in Times Square at night but it was amazingly bright with the amount of light everywhere. Walking around the big streets, Davide and I were just too overwhelmed with the sheer size and impact of the city. Filming were taking place, streets were busy with millions of tourists, even large groups of black gangs took to the streets while cops are everywhere possibly as a result of the 9/11 attacks. We walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street and visited Ground Zero (former site of the World Trade Centre). You can see that the neighbouring buildings are still very badly damaged, makes you think what the people of New York must have been through. We got a boat cruise around the Statue of Liberty, amazing to actually see it in front of me. We queued for nearly 2 hours to get to the top of the Empire States Building - we went in the evening which I would probably recommend given the amazing skyline New York has to offer. Central Park is one big park! Davide and I managed to spend 4 hours here... the park recently hosted 'The Gates', an art event which saw the whole park transformed to a long path of orange flags... quite interesting. Shopping is what New York is famous for, there's Fifth Avenue, Soho or even cheap fakes at the giant China Town. I was on the lookout for Abercrombie & Fitch and we were lucky to find a shop near the Pier. Clothes were good aswell as the staff, as Davide and I agreed, too bad they're not for sale, or for hire. This is a hyperactive city. I never thought I'd ever make it to New York let alone in Canada so I'm completely proud of myself and my travels. Atleast now I can say I've been around the world. I have lots of photos and have just recently started combining my photo albums and picture frames. Though this may mark the end to my travels for a while. I am still as always ever excited in more travels in the future. It's definately an experience of a lifetime. New York is a city you'll love, you can't avoid the their I Love NY t-shirts! |
